HOST ANIMALS

The choice of host animal is critical to most custom antibody projects. The cost of the project, required quantities of antibodies, and potential responsiveness to the antigen are all critical factors that must be considered before selecting the host appropriate for your custom antibody project. Rabbits are the standard choice for small quantities of antibodies at a relatively inexpensive price. Goats and sheep are slightly more expensive but produce more antibodies. Horses are the typical choice for the production of large volumes of antibodies, though cattle and hens are an excellent, inexpensive choice when medium to large volumes of antibodies are required or when the antigen is a conserved mammalian protein. However, the difficulty in purifying the IgY from egg yolks must be considered before selection of chickens.
In addition to polyclonal antibody projects, Quality Biorsources, Inc. also offers custom monoclonal antibody services.
The Quality Bioresources, Inc. antibody facility is home to a number of host animals. Each of these animals receives daily care from the resident animal care technician. IACUC review, veterinary oversight, and USDA inspections ensure the safety and health of the animals used by QBI in antibody projects.
Despite the differences in size, essentially the same protocols are used for all animals with excellent results. However, at no additional charge, customized protocols can be utilized at the customers request. Please inquire for your particular custom protocol.
